Overview of the Company
The Planning Council’s mission is to plan, develop and manage human services to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. The Planning Council is a member of the National Association of Planning Councils and the United Way of South Hampton Roads. Every year we touch thousands of lives: preventing homelessness; licensing and training child care providers; offering crisis intervention and connections to resources; helping parents balance work and family; and working with communities to solve human service problems.

Since 1941, The Planning Council has been dedicated to the planning, development, and management of those human services which improve the quality of community life. We assist people in meeting human service needs, offering a variety of programs. All services are confidential and many are offered at no cost to the consumer. We also serve corporations, agencies, and governmental bodies seeking help with the planning and management of the human services arena. The Council serves Hampton Roads, Western Tidewater, Northeastern North Carolina, Northern Virginia and Maryland. We welcome inquiries from all sectors of the community.

We lead in planning, developing and managing human services through people with superior knowledge and experience who are dedicated to improving quality of life.

The Planning Council is a not-for-profit, community-based planning corporation operating under the governance of a voluntary regional Board of Directors. The Council cooperates with the United Way of South Hampton Roads, federal, state and local governments, and numerous public and private sector organizations to meet human services needs. The Council is a Certified Agency of the United Way of South Hampton Roads, and a member of the National Association of Planning Councils (NAPC).

Classifications of vocations within the company:
The Planning Council employs individuals in various human services arenas in: including homeless prevention, community assessments, child care subsidy administration, child care nutrition and food program administration, child care referral, crisis intervention, and information and referral services locally and regionally. Positions range from those requiring degrees in social work, human services, sociology, and urban affairs, to those requiring job- specific certification. Support and general administration positions include information technology, finance and fiscal, and human resources.
